Bloating in Recovery is a common issue faced by people going through recovery from eating disorders like Anorexia Nervosa.
Why does Bloating happen?
During our restriction face, our body goes into starvation mode, so our body stops trusting you. It stops trusting you that you will feed it enough. So it holds onto those nutrients to keep your body alive.
Bloating is often uncomfortable, and at times painful. Many people in recovery misunderstand the bloat to fat. Bloat is not fat! It is just a temporary swelling due to water or gas. Its temporary, which only lasts a few hours or returns to its normal state overnight.
So how can we reduce the effects of bloating?
There are a number of ways one can reduce bloating, although it differs from person to person.

➼Eat slowly and mindfully.
I know its easier said than done, as most of us recovering from eating disorders tend to finish our food as soon as it arrives. Sometimes due to extreme hunger, or due to the panic of seeing food in front of you. In cases like BED (Binge Eating Disorder), where you eat a ton of food or calories in one go, also lead to upset stomach and bloating.
What we need to do is practice mindfulness. Look at what your eating, chew the food properly, taste it and swallow.
➼Dont talk while eating.
Talking leads to air going into the mouth to the stomach which leads to bloating.
➼Avoid aerated drinks.
Aerated drinks should be avoided. Aerated drinks like sodas have bubbles of carbon dioxide which leads to bloating.
➼Incorporate food that help soothe bloating.
Foods like fennel, ginger, yogurt, papayas and bananas help reduce bloating. Incorporate them into your diets.
➼Drink herbal teas.
Teas like peppermint tea, ginger tea, etc helps with bloating alot.
Well Bloating is part of recovery. Its hard, its uncomfortable, but you can get through this!
